如果要用一个比喻来形容 Paul Motian，他就是爵士鼓手中的 Picasso。
如今爵士界大有“回到 the-good-old-days“之迹象，也就是 bebop 年代。所以 Motian 更像是一阵清风，继续我行我素的坚持他的 \"to destroy bebop\" 行动。Motian 首先觉得爵士鼓不该有所谓的“规矩”，他带领的爵士组合也多数是没有钢琴这个传统爵士重奏乐器的。Motian 常常挑战他的组员们自由的演奏，但又同时追从旋律感，从而编制出他与众不同的声音。
当然用形容词描述的好听并不代表音乐会真的好听或易听嘛。。于是在很长的一段时间内我一直都没有好好的去认识 Motian 的音乐，因为自由爵士真是要仔细安静的去领会的。因为 Motian 的打击部分不按常规的 keep tempo and beat，常常漂浮在半空，所以一个不留神就可能觉得他在曲子中的存在感不强。但是在熟悉他的音乐后就会感觉到，没有他那零散的色彩曲子还真是会失色许多哇。。

然后稍微介绍下早期的 Motian。
Paul Motian （1931 - 2011年）出生于美国。12岁开始玩鼓，
早期的 Motian 曾和钢琴家 Thelonious Monk 有过短暂的合作，但收到大众的关注还是因为他在 1959 - 1964 之间担任 Bill Evans 三重奏中的鼓手 （当时 EvansTrio 的贝斯一位由传奇的 Scott LaFaro 担任）。 期间 Evans Trio 录制的专辑多成经典之作，例如 Sunday at the Village Vanguard 和 Waltz for Debby，同是 1961年时他们在纽约的 Village Vanguard 现场演出时录制。
后来在 2001年接受采访时 Motian 对这些“经典”的感慨是：
\"We were great. But look at this—I got $136 for the famous legendary record, $110 for the gig, and $107 for the second record. Look at my gig book: here we are at the D.C. Showplace. That\'s where Bill said, first night, second night, \'Ladies and gentlemen—I don\'t feel like playing tonight. Can you understand that?\' - 是的我们是不错。但是那张经典的传奇专辑只给我带来了 136元的收入，加上演出本身收到的 110元，还有录制第二张专辑收到的 107元。（所以）Bill 在 D.C. Showplace 演出时会连续两晚（对听众说）：女士们先生们，我今晚真不想演奏。你们能明白为什么么？
\"And they kind of did. Bill was sincere, and he had a great sense of humor. He was good, but I was good with him, you know, because I listened. \"You know what I like best on that record? The sounds of all those people, glasses and chatter—I mean, I know you\'re supposed to be very offended and all, but I like it. They\'re just there and all.\" - 你知道这张专辑中我最喜欢的部分是什么么？是那些人的声音，那些杯子和谈笑声--或许（作为一个演奏者）你应该对此感到不满，但是我确很喜欢。这些人就那样的在那一刻里。
