早在上世纪２０年代的百老汇，《芝加哥》舞台上流行的版本是以轻歌舞剧（ＶＡＵＤＥＶＩＬＬＥ）为主要形式。那时候音乐剧（ＭＵＳＩＣＡＬ）的名字还没有发明出来，而轻歌舞剧也因忽视以剧为本的创作原则正逐渐衰退。流传下来的《芝加哥》的音乐剧改编自话剧。《芝加哥》话剧出台于１９２７年，此时正是美国第一部音乐剧经典《演艺船》（ＳＨＯＷ ＢＯＡＴ，Ｊ．科恩作曲）出台的日子。以剧为本和对人性的关怀是Ｊ．科恩领导下的那场美国音乐戏剧**奠定的基本原则，反对种族歧视与社会不公正则成为那个时代的主题。
